M400 Series® Base-8 cabling
SR4 40G and 100G and SR4.2 400G over multimode fibre
Complete Connect’s M400 Series MTP® (MPO) contains a full range or patch cords, breakouts, conversion cables and trunks for SR4 connectivity over multimode or PSM4 over singlemode fibre.
QSFP+, QSFP28 QSFP-DD connectivity
MTP® (MPO) Base-8 fibre trunk cables are mainly used to directly connect between MTP® (MPO) panels for patching into other MTP® (MPO) panels or to QSFP type SR4 or SR4.2 transceivers.
Polarity B MTP® (MPO) trunk cables with male connectors will keep to cabling standards and will enable a connection to patch cables for SR4 transmission between QSFP type transceivers.
Patch to MTP® (MPO) trunk cables
We also stock MTP® (MPO) patch cables that can connect to MTP® (MPO) trunks/backbones.
These will typically also be polarity B but will have different gender connectors (male to female).
The polarity and gender of your patch cords will depend on your network layout and type of MTP® (MPO) adaptor used.

Cable Fire Rating Requirements and CPR
European (including UK) Fire Rating Requirements for Data Cables
The introduction of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) in 2017 updated the cable sheath fire rating requirements for data cables. Although the rating system was harmonised (Euroclass system), the implementation of CPR was down to each country’s national standards body. This means that the fire rating required in a particular location is both country and application specific. The majority of countries require Dca rated cables as a minimum for patch cables and Cca or higher for trunk cables.
Bca rated cables
Depending on application, some countries require Bca rated cables. Please contact us directly for Bca rated cables. Please contact us directly for these cables.
Plenum OFNP rated cables are not covered within EU/UK regulations
Plenum sheath is specified within regulations in the USA. Plenum sheath cables would not automatically meet with EU fire rating requirements.

Generic verus Specific brand
MPO is the generic name for “multi-fibre push-on” connectors as opposed to single fibre connectors such as LC or SC. There are many manufacturers of MPO connectors each with varying degrees of performance. MTP® is a brand of MPO connector made by US Conec®.
All MPO connectors have a floating ferrule which is aligned using guide pins and help against the opposing MPO ferrule with a spring. The manufactured tolerance of the ferrule and the quality of the springs are key factors in determining the lifetime performance of the connector. MTP® connectors have a very low manufactured tolerance and a high spring force which ensures continued performance over time.
For more information – Differences between generic MPO connectors and the higher performing MTP® (MPO) connector.
Creating a link between MTP (MPO) to LC cassettes
Compatibility with QSFP+ transceiver modules
- All QSFP+ 40G-BASE-SR4 and QSFP28 100G-BASE-SR4 transceiver modules have ports with male connections (with guide pins).
- The MTP® (MPO) patch cables need a female connector (no pins) to connect to the transceiver
- Transceivers from the leading switch manufacturers such as CISCO, Juniper, Extreme, HP, Dell, Arista and Brocade all use an MT ferrule which is the same ferrule as used in the MTP® connector.
- All Complete Connect 40G and 100G cables use the MT Elite® ferrule with the MTP® 12 fibre connector. This provides the best optical connection with all major QSFP+ transceivers. Some MPO connectors do not perform as well.
Cleaning MTP® (MPO) cables and transceiver ports
Complete Connect recommend using an IBC® MTP® cleaning tool for cleaning all MTP® cables and QSFP+ transceiver ports. These are in stock.
Maximum transmission distances
The IEEE standard states that 40G and 100G SR4 can be transmitted up to 100 m / 70 m over OM3 and up to 150 m / 100 m over OM4 respectively. In practice greater distances can be achieved.
Testing 40G or 100G ports or cables
An M400 Series loopback test cable can be used to test these ports.
Complete Connect’s M400 Series MTP® patch cables are for connection between ports in racks within data centre environments to create SR4 and PSM4 direct connections. Available in polarity B these MTP® patch cables enable connection between QSFP+ and QSFP28 transceiver ports or between transceivers and MTP® adaptor ports to connect to M400 trunk cables for connection to adjacent racks, pods of racks or distribution areas.
M400 Series patch cables are compatible with all transceivers and other MTP® trunk systems without any loss of performance including BASE-8 fibre systems.
M400 Series cables have a micro cable construction which gives them a small diameter, a low weight per meter and a low bend radius. Their intended use is to run between data racks in easily accessible overhead cable trays or open ducting systems separate from power cables or heavier copper cables.
